Bank-related text messages still up 2.7 percent in 1Q

Leading digital solutions platform Globe on Wednesday bared foiling more attempts at robbing depositors of their hard-earned money in the first quarter of 2023 when it partnered with banks and financial institutions to fight online fraud.

Latest data show the number of malicious bank-related messages blocked by Globe aggregated 4.07 million during the period. This was 2.7 percent higher than only 3.97 million in the same period last year.

“Malicious activities such as identity theft, phishing, and spam messages can severely impact consumers and major stakeholders in various industries, especially the financial sector. At Globe, we understand the importance of safeguarding our customers from these threats,”  said Globe chief information security officer Anton Bonifacio.

Globe had a formal agreement with the Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP) in August last year that allowed the banks share data and intelligence with the telecommunications company for enhanced fraud detection and prevention.

Over 12 months, Globe blocked 85 million bank-related spam and scam messages as it boosted the crackdown against fraudsters.

Aside from the partnership with banks and financial institutions, Globe continues to invest in tools and launched channels to filter spam and scam SMS reporting.

It has invested $20 million boosting its spam and scam SMS detection and blocking system.
