Cebu Yard delivers world-first methanol bulk carrier

Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. has delivered Hull No. SC443, an 81,200-metric-ton dual-fuel methanol KAMSARMAX bulk carrier, from its Cebu shipyard—the first of its kind in the world.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. attended the naming and delivery ceremony, highlighting the Philippines’ growing role in next-generation shipbuilding. SC443 can run on both methanol and conventional fuel, cutting emissions sharply and pushing cleaner shipping closer to reality.

Engineered for efficiency, the vessel reduces carbon dioxide (CO₂) by 10 percent, nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) by 80 percent, and sulfur oxides (SOₓ) by 99 percent compared with conventional bulk carriers.

Methanol is emerging as a top alternative fuel, helping the maritime industry work toward the International Maritime Organization’s goal of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions by 40 percent by 2030.

Tsuneishi Shipbuilding, a global leader in bulk carriers, container ships, and tankers, operates shipyards in the Philippines, Japan, and China, with offices across Asia and Europe. The company is a pioneer in methanol-fueled bulk carrier design, advancing the push for zero-emission vessels.

The delivery follows President Marcos Jr.’s June visit to Osaka, where he met Tsuneishi executives to discuss expansion in the Philippines and plans for the KAMSARMAX rollout.

After more than 30 years at West Cebu Estate, Tsuneishi has launched nearly 400 ships and delivered over 370 worldwide, showcasing Filipino craftsmanship supported by Aboitiz InfraCapital Economic Estates’ infrastructure and integrated support ecosystem.
