The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is fast-tracking airport upgrades across the country to make domestic flights more affordable and accessible.
Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez has ordered all airports to have at least a 2,100-meter runway to handle jet aircraft, except in areas where terrain makes expansion difficult.
So far, 20 commercial airports meet the new runway standard. These include nine international airports, 10 principal class 1 airports, and one principal class 2 airport. In total, 29 airports are currently operating jet aircraft.
CAAP is also studying runway extensions for other airports, depending on land availability, terrain, and safety requirements.
To increase flight availability, the agency is expanding night operations. At present, 23 airports are capable of handling flights at night. Cauayan and Tuguegarao airports are next in line for night-rating upgrades, while Busuanga, Siargao, Dipolog, Pagadian, and Antique airports are also being prepared for future improvements.
CAAP director general Retired Lt. Gen. Raul Del Rosario said the upgrades will increase airport capacity, allow more flights, and encourage airline competition, which could lead to safer and more affordable air travel for Filipinos.
The agency said it will continue working with the Department of Transportation and other government partners to modernize airport infrastructure and prepare the country’s aviation system for future demand.
