MMSP races ahead: Pasig stations near completion

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) reported Friday that the Pasig portion of the ₱488.5-billion Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) is moving steadily, with major progress at the Ortigas Avenue and Shaw Boulevard Stations. These stations will connect commuters across Quezon City, Pasig City, and Taguig City.

President Ferdinand Marcos inspected ongoing works at Shaw Boulevard Station in Pasig before breaking ground for the Kalayaan Avenue and BGC Stations in Taguig.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said that construction at Ortigas Station, delayed for nearly three years, began last September, while pre-construction at Shaw Boulevard Station is nearly complete. “This will be a big help to commuters, especially those working in the Ortigas business district. Their travel will now be easier and faster,” he said.

The Pasig segment, known as Contract Package 104 (CP 104), spans 3.397 kilometers and is handled by the Tokyu-Tobishima-Megawide Joint Venture. MMSP currently has a 90.92 percent right-of-way completion, with full completion expected this June.

Meanwhile, ground was broken for Taguig’s Kalayaan Avenue and BGC Stations, covering 1.331 kilometers under Contract Package 105 (CP 105). Construction will use a Tunnel Boring Machine for tunnels and the Cut-and-Cover method for stations, with a projected completion timeline of nearly six years.

The Metro Manila Subway, billed as the country’s “crown jewel” of mass transit, will span 33 kilometers with 17 stations across eight cities, including a spur to NAIA Terminal 3. Once operational, travel time from Quezon City to NAIA is expected to drop from 70 minutes to 35 minutes, serving up to 500,000 passengers daily. The full system is projected to be operational by 2032.

The MMSP represents a major leap in public infrastructure, promising faster, more reliable travel for commuters and easing traffic congestion in the capital region.
