The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has commissioned a new 115 kilovolt (kV) to 34.5 kV substation in Real Road, Calamba City, Laguna.
The facility, it said, will relieve the neighboring Calamba substation and boost available capacity that will benefit not only customers in the city but also those in portions of the cities of Tanauan and Sto. Tomas in Batangas.
“The project involved the energization of two 34.5 kV distribution feeders serving enterprise customers, housing complexes and subdivisions, and key establishments such as the Calamba City Hall and Sto. Tomas Doctors Hospital and Medical Center,” Meralco said in a statement.
It also said the substation is part of efforts to improve Meralco’s distribution system to deliver safe, sufficient and reliable power service to customers.
Last February, Meralco also started the development of a new substation in Kawit, Cavite to support the industrial expansion and growing energy demand of communities in the area.
The Cavite facility was pursued after the company signed an agreement for the construction of a gas-insulated switchgear substation with solutions provider First Orient International Ventures Corp. for the facility set to be completed by April 2024 on a 2,377-square meter land bank in Island Cove.
Meralco said the new substation will house three transformer banks, each capable of delivering 83 megavolt amperes (MVA) of power or a combined capacity of 249 MVA.
When fully operational, the project will address the power requirement of Island Cove and at the same time improve voltage regulation in the area and guarantee operational switching flexibility when needed.
It will also accommodate new load applications and relieve the critically loaded circuits of existing Meralco substations in the area.
