LGU extends aid to fisherfolk amid submarine cable maintenance

The Municipal Government of San Felipe has rolled out a community information campaign and assistance program to support coastal residents affected by ongoing submarine cable maintenance in the province’s waters.

A total of 360 family heads from Barangay Sto. Niño received essential support packages. Beneficiaries include small-scale fishermen, members of the Lambaklad fishing team, and Barangay Tanods who serve as maritime watchers in the community.

The initiative was led by the Office of the Mayor in coordination with the Municipal Agriculture Office. Members of the Sangguniang Bayan and officials of Barangay Sto. Niño attended the distribution ceremony, highlighting a unified local government response to concerns from the fishing sector.

Sangguniang Bayan Member and Agriculture Committee chairman Gary Fariñas said the local government aims to ensure that families relying on fishing are supported while offshore maintenance activities are underway.

The assistance was provided following reports of restricted fishing areas due to the presence of a maintenance vessel operating in local waters.

The Municipal Agriculture Office said it will continue monitoring the situation and keep communication lines open with fisherfolk to address concerns and help protect their livelihoods during the cable maintenance period.
