Nestlé leads push toward plastic circularity

Nestlé Philippines has been recognized for its leadership in advancing the country’s plastic waste management agenda, earning two honors at the 2026 Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Recognition Program for its role in strengthening recycling systems and industry collaboration.

The company received both a Special Citation for obliged enterprises and the EPR Partners Leadership Award during the ceremony held on January 30, 2026—making it the only organization to secure two distinctions at the event.

The awards highlight Nestlé Philippines’ efforts to help operationalize the Extended Producer Responsibility Act of 2022, a landmark law that requires large companies to recover plastic packaging equivalent to the volume they place in the market.

According to program organizers, the company has achieved recovery volumes equivalent to 100 percent of its plastic packaging footprint, positioning it among the early industry leaders in compliance and circularity initiatives.

Mauricio Alarcon, chairman and chief executive officer of Nestlé Philippines, said the recognition reflects the growing importance of cross-sector collaboration in tackling the country’s plastic waste challenge.

“This recognition is a testament to Nestlé Philippines’ commitment to supporting EPR in the country and also highlights the value of working together to shape a waste-free future,” Alarcon said. He added that strengthening recycling and waste management systems remains central to the company’s broader sustainability strategy.

A key initiative cited during the recognition is Nestlé Philippines’ collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the National Plastic Action Partnership to establish the NPAP Flexible Plastic Recycling Working Group.

The group brings together policymakers, industry leaders and development partners to accelerate investments and deploy recycling technologies capable of processing flexible plastics—one of the most challenging waste streams to recover.

The EPR Recognition Program was organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in partnership with the Philippine Alliance for Recycling Materials Sustainability and the National Ecology Center.
