New Honda chief shifts gears toward value

Honda Cars Philippines Inc. is changing drivers—but not its destination—as it taps Hidekazu Arai as president starting April 1, steering the company toward a sharper focus on value-led growth.

Arai replaces Rie Miyake, who moves on to a new role at Honda Motor Co. Ltd., in a leadership reshuffle that signals a recalibration of strategy in an increasingly competitive Philippine auto market.

With nearly 20 years inside Honda’s global machine, Arai arrives with a résumé built on planning spreadsheets and factory floors alike.

He most recently served as chief administrator of the Business Planning Department at Honda’s headquarters in Japan, with earlier stints at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. and the Saitama Factory, experience that blends boardroom strategy with production-line pragmatism.

HCPI is betting that mix will matter. As the industry accelerates toward electrification and more discerning consumers, Arai is expected to fine-tune operations while extracting more value from every model rolled out and every customer served.

The headquarters brief gives Arai a clear road map to raise product value, refine the customer experience, and keep up with the transition to cleaner mobility while keeping focus on what ultimately convinces buyers to commit.

In other words, less about flashy horsepower, more about everyday relevance.

Arai inherits a brand with solid footing among Filipino motorists. His task now is to make sure Honda doesn’t just keep up with the curve—but drives it.
