DOT pushes value travel as fuel costs rise

As fuel prices climb, the Department of Tourism (DOT) is urging Filipinos to adopt more cost-conscious and responsible travel habits, while emphasizing that the country remains open to tourists.

In an advisory issued Tuesday, the agency said the tourism sector continues to be a vital economic engine, supporting millions of jobs and small businesses nationwide despite mounting economic pressures.

To help travelers cope, the DOT is promoting “value-driven” options that allow Filipinos to keep യാത്രing without overspending.

Among the alternatives highlighted are short-distance trips, staycations, and low-impact activities such as walking and biking tours.

The DOT also encouraged travelers to explore community-based tourism, including farm visits and local food experiences—options that reduce fuel use while directly supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises.

The agency further underscored the importance of planning ahead, advising tourists to book early and choose DOT-accredited establishments to ensure safety, reliability, and competitive pricing.

At the same time, the DOT called for more mindful and sustainable travel behavior, including conserving energy in accommodations, minimizing waste, respecting local customs, and opting for eco-friendly transport and lodging whenever possible.

To guide travelers, the DOT recommends digital tools such as the Travel PH App, which provides up-to-date information on destinations and services.

The agency said that by making deliberate and informed choices, Filipinos can continue to enjoy meaningful travel experiences while helping sustain the tourism industry amid rising costs.
