Galunggong landings nearly double in Navotas in March

The Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA), under the Department of Agriculture (DA), reported that galunggong (round scad) landings at the Navotas Fish Port Complex rose sharply in March 2026.

Total landings reached 16,165.52 metric tons, თითქმის double the 8,161.92 metric tons recorded in March last year.

PFDA said the increase was due to better fishing conditions and the recovery of fish stocks after the three-month closed fishing season from November 1 to January 31. The policy, implemented for over a decade, has helped replenish fish populations and improve catch levels.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the higher figures show the long-term benefits of fisheries management. He added that the peak season for galunggong is expected to last until the end of July 2026.

Of the total catch, shortfin scad made up 9,731.68 metric tons, while bigeye scad accounted for 6,433.84 metric tons.

PFDA also noted that environmental factors, including the possible early onset of El Niño, may have influenced fish movement and improved catch efficiency. Favorable conditions during fishing operations in late January also contributed.

Despite the surge, the Navotas Fish Port Complex managed the higher volume smoothly, ensuring proper handling and distribution. PFDA said ongoing upgrades in cold storage, logistics, and post-harvest facilities are important to maintain supply quality and reduce losses.

Officials said they are monitoring whether the increased supply can be sustained in the coming months.
