SM Supermalls leads nationwide coastal cleanups for World Water Day

In observance of World Water Day, SM Supermalls, through its corporate social responsibility arm SM Cares, conducted coastal cleanup drives across six locations involving seven malls nationwide.

The initiative focused on educating volunteers and local communities about proper waste segregation, recycling, and disposal. Organizers emphasized that simple daily actions, such as sorting trash correctly, can help protect marine ecosystems.

Cleanup activities were held at SM City La Union, SM City Urdaneta Central, SM City Tanza, SM City Daet, SM City Consolacion, SM Seaside City Cebu, and SM J Mall. Participants collected and sorted various types of waste, including plastic packaging and beverage containers, highlighting common pollutants found along coastlines.

The activity aimed to raise awareness about the environmental impact of improper waste management and encourage more responsible habits among Filipinos.

According to Engr. Liza Silerio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Program Director for Environment and Sustainability, protecting marine environments requires sustained education, awareness, and collective action.

The coastal cleanups are part of the company’s broader sustainability efforts under the SM Green Movement and its Waste-Free Future campaign.

SM Cares also announced upcoming environmental activities, including cleanup drives for World Oceans Day in June, International Coastal Cleanup in September, and National Environmental Awareness Month in November.

The initiative highlights the spirit of bayanihan, bringing together communities, partners, and stakeholders to protect the environment.
