Nickel Asia Corp., a Philippine-listed mining company, is stepping further beyond its nickel roots after signing a deal to acquire a 20 percent stake in a Kazakhstan copper mining entity, marking a strategic move into broader metal resources.
The Philippine-listed mining company said it entered into a Membership Interest Sale and Purchase Agreement with Silk Road Resources Ltd. and East Copper Production LLP for the acquisition. Financial details of the deal weren’t immediately made available.
The asset at the center of the deal is GRK MLD LLP, which holds full rights to operate the Karchiga copper mine in Kazakhstan. The mine sits within the Central Asian Copper Belt, a highly mineralized region known globally for rich copper deposits.
Nickel Asia said GRK has an annual production capacity of about 8,500 tons of copper sulfide concentrate and 2,000 tons of copper cathode, positioning it as a steady source of copper output in the region.
The transaction remains subject to due diligence, regulatory approvals, and other closing conditions before it is finalized.
Nickel Asia said the move supports its long term strategy of evolving from a nickel focused miner into a more diversified natural resources platform with exposure to multiple metals across Asia. In simple terms, the company is no longer putting all its eggs in one mineral basket.
Copper is a key industrial metal used in everything from electric vehicles to power grids, and demand is expected to rise alongside global electrification trends. By entering the copper space, Nickel Asia is positioning itself closer to that demand curve.
The deal also reflects a broader trend among mining firms seeking geographic and commodity diversification amid shifting global supply chains and energy transition pressures.
If completed, the investment would give the Philippine miner a foothold in one of Central Asia’s established copper-producing regions, adding a new chapter to its regional expansion strategy.
