Air China route boosts China tourism rebound

The Philippines is stepping up its push to revive Chinese arrivals, welcoming Air China’s inaugural Chongqing–Manila (CKG–MNL) flight on May 2 as a key milestone in rebuilding one of its most vital tourism markets.

The new direct service strengthens connectivity between Chongqing and Manila, aligning with the government’s reinstated visa-free entry policy for Chinese tourists arriving via Manila and Cebu.

Together, these measures ease travel frictions and position the country to recover lost momentum from a market that once powered significant tourism growth.

The maiden flight touched down shortly after midnight carrying at least 155 passengers, with the return leg departing with 145 travelers—an early indication of healthy, balanced demand for the route.

Tourism officials expect the expanded air link to generate wider economic benefits, from stronger hotel occupancy to increased retail activity and job creation across the sector.

As one of China’s largest metropolitan centers, Chongqing represents a high-potential source of outbound travelers who now enjoy more convenient access to Philippine destinations.

Air China’s growing footprint in the Philippines includes existing connections from Beijing and Chengdu to Manila, with more than 130 direct flights and close to 34,000 seats offered in the first quarter of 2026.

China remains a key source market, with 150,708 visitors recorded as of April 30—underscoring strong recovery prospects as connectivity continues to improve.
