Over 3,500 barangays to get internet access under PLDT expansion program

PLDT plans to bring internet connectivity to more than 3,500 previously unconnected barangays across the Philippines as part of its rural network expansion program.

The initiative aims to improve access to online learning, government services, and digital livelihood opportunities, especially in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs).

PLDT is working with key government agencies, including the Department of Education, Department of the Interior and Local Government, and Department of Information and Communications Technology, to speed up the rollout of internet infrastructure nationwide.

According to PLDT and Smart Network Strategy and Architecture Head Roderick S. Santiago, cooperation between the government and private sector helps address long-standing infrastructure challenges and allows faster deployment of connectivity in remote communities.

The company said the program builds on years of collaboration with government agencies such as the Anti-Red Tape Authority, the National Telecommunications Commission, and local government units to simplify permits for telecom projects.

PLDT also cited Executive Order No. 32, signed in 2023, which streamlined the processes for building and maintaining telecommunications and internet infrastructure.

The company said continued investments in network expansion are intended to help bridge the digital divide and support more inclusive access to digital services for Filipinos nationwide.
