The Philippine Rice Research Institute (Philippine Rice Research Institute) is urging rice farmers to adopt practical cost-saving measures as rising global prices of farm inputs continue to increase production expenses during the wet season planting period.
PhilRice agriculturist Fredierick Saludez said farmers can cut costs by using certified inbred seeds, properly leveling rice fields, and adopting mechanized planting methods.
According to PhilRice, using certified seeds from accredited growers instead of uncertified seeds can significantly reduce seed expenses while improving crop growth and yield potential. For transplanted rice, reducing seed use from the usual 66 kilograms per hectare to the recommended 20 to 40 kilograms could save farmers between P460 and P1,220 per hectare.
The agency also said proper land leveling can lower production costs by about P1,850 per hectare by improving irrigation and reducing weed and apple snail problems.
PhilRice further encouraged farmers to use mechanical transplanters and drum seeders to reduce labor costs. Mechanical transplanting alone may cut planting expenses by around P300 per hectare.
The initiative highlights the government’s effort to help rice farmers cope with rising production costs while improving farm efficiency and maintaining rice supply in the country.
