Agri group urges rejection of proposed nutrient model over food security fears

The Philippine Chamber of Agriculture and Food Inc. (PCAFI) is asking President Marcos Jr. to reject the 2026 Philippine Nutrient Profile Model (PNPM) proposed by the Department of Health. With inflation at 7.2 percent, the group warns the strict limits on fat, salt, and sugar would affect common, affordable household items like bread, milk, canned goods, and meat, raising prices and reducing availability.

PCAFI argues the proposal unfairly targets packaged foods as the main cause of diseases, ignoring other factors like lack of fresh food access, education, and healthcare. They note the rules would harm everyone in the food chain — from farmers and fisherfolk to small businesses and consumers — risking supply disruptions and making basic foods harder to get.

The group adds the plan clashes with national goals to strengthen agriculture and ensure affordable food. They want the proposal withdrawn, calling instead for wider stakeholder input and proper studies to measure impacts before any policy is set. The Department of Agriculture has also backed this call for further review.
