Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT), the fully automated facility run by International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) at Australia’s Port of Melbourne, has deployed four new Kalmar hybrid automatic container carriers as part of its expansion plan.
The upgrade lifts the terminal’s annual capacity to more than 1.6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), while boosting efficiency and reducing environmental impact. VICT chief executive Bruno Porchietto said the investment reinforces commitments to growth, better performance, and sustainable technology, noting the strong partnership with Kalmar has helped set high operational standards in Australia.
Kalmar’s Global Sales head Karri Keskinen added the project builds on a long-running collaboration, with the new equipment designed to deliver reliable productivity and meet customer demands. Custom upgrades were developed together to cut loading times and improve output.
The hybrid units can lift two containers at once, up to 60 tons total. Fitted with lithium-ion batteries that recover energy during use, they are 40 percent more energy efficient and lower carbon emissions by up to 50 tons per unit each year.
As the only fully automated container terminal in the southern hemisphere, VICT has worked with Kalmar since launching operations in 2017. This latest rollout marks another step in its drive to serve global trade with higher productivity and greener operations.
The expansion shows ICTSI’s ability to scale and modernize international assets, combining automation and sustainability to stay competitive in global ports—relevant for tracking the Philippine firm’s global footprint and the industry shift toward low-emission port equipment.
