Following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Southern Mindanao and nearby areas Monday, the Department of Energy (DOE) confirmed it is leading coordinated efforts to restore power supply safely and quickly. Working with agencies including NEA, NPC, TransCo, and NGCP, as well as local power firms and cooperatives, teams are assessing damage to infrastructure and deploying extra personnel and equipment through Task Force Kapatid to speed up repairs.
Initial reports show outages hit roughly 864,000 households across several provinces, though NEA noted 87 percent of affected municipalities already have power back. NGCP has restored transmission lines in South Cotabato and Sarangani, while work continues in General Santos City. Restoration prioritizes critical sites like hospitals and evacuation centers, with backup power monitored to keep these facilities running. Operations proceed cautiously due to ongoing aftershocks, with safety of workers and communities as the top concern. The public is advised to stay clear of damaged power lines and follow guidance from local authorities and PHIVOLCS.
