The Department of Agriculture (DA) is calling for coordinated efforts across agencies to safeguard Laguna Lake, ensuring it supports livelihoods, food supply, water security, and flood control.
After consulting fisherfolk and operators, officials stressed the need to balance production and sustainability. The lake supplies about 40 percent of Metro Manila’s milkfish and tilapia, making it key to food security.
A key agreement reached: the Manggahan and Napindan floodgates will stay open until the rainy season starts to improve water quality and prevent fish kills. Long-term policies are being studied.
Plans also include expanded water quality monitoring, faster permit services from the Coast Guard, and support for aquaculture. The lake is also set to host future floating solar projects.
