NPC deploys 5 MW gensets to ease Catanduanes power crisis

The National Power Corp. (NPC) has activated 5 megawatts of leased generator sets at the Marinawa Substation to address ongoing power shortages in Catanduanes. Announced Thursday, the move answers the Department of Energy’s call for immediate relief amid widespread rotational blackouts.

Along with two power transformers, the equipment will restore normal supply to support local businesses, health services, and the start of classes. NPC coordinated closely with the energy department, the local electric cooperative, and other agencies to fast-track procurement, permits, and a temporary supply agreement while long-term solutions are developed.

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin noted the Philippine National Oil Company is helping secure lower-cost diesel payable over three months, stressing that cooperation is key to avoiding a return to 12-hour outages. NPC oversees hundreds of off-grid power facilities across the country, including the island province’s transmission system.
