The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS announced the winners of its 21st National Art Competition during an awarding ceremony held on June 15 at the GSIS Theater.
This year’s competition carried the theme “Ang Mga Pilipinong Lingkod Bayan” (The Filipino Public Servant), calling on artists to create positive depictions of public workers fulfilling their duties. A total of 700 entries were submitted from artists across the country, all under the representational category this year. Entries came from Luzon (622), Visayas (50), and Mindanao (28).
Delmar J. Torrano took home first prize for his work Pusong Itinanghal. John Morri U. Cariño placed second with Tyan-gol, while Jose Ceriola won third prize for Medic Kit. Seven artists received honorable mentions, and three works were selected as Juror’s Choice. All winning pieces highlight the dedication, sacrifice, and humanity of public servants.
GSIS president and general manager Wick Veloso said that the competition was held in line with the agency’s 89th anniversary. He explained the initiative aimed to highlight the contributions of public workers who often work behind the scenes. The selection process was overseen by a panel of distinguished judges including renowned artists Romulo Galicano, Imelda Cajipe Endaya, and Nemesio Miranda Jr.
The competition, organized in partnership with the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP), has become one of the longest-running and most prestigious government-supported art events in the country. AAP President Fidel Sarmiento commended GSIS for its consistent support of Filipino artists and arts development.
Winning artworks will be added to GSIS’ permanent collection and featured in the institution’s 90th anniversary calendar. Following the awarding ceremony, an exhibition showcasing winning entries, finalists, and selected works was opened at the rehabilitated GSIS Museo ng Sining, where the pieces will be preserved for public viewing and future generations.
