PH, Germany advance economic ties, EU deal

The Philippines and Germany are moving beyond conventional trade relations toward a more strategic economic partnership centered on resilient supply chains, innovation, and sustainability, according to the Department of Trade and Industry.

Department of Trade and Industry Undersecretary Allan B. Gepty said the shift was underscored during the 3rd Joint Economic Commission (JEC), held in Berlin on June 22, which gathered more than 30 government and industry representatives to advance cooperation on trade, investment, and priority growth sectors.

The meeting was co-chaired by Gepty and Stefan Rouenhoff of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, reinforcing both sides’ commitment to deepen bilateral economic engagement and support ongoing talks on a Philippines–European Union free trade agreement.

Officials said the JEC comes at a time of global economic realignment, positioning it as a key platform for aligning policies, strengthening supply chain resilience, and identifying new investment opportunities in innovation-driven industries.

Both sides also signaled continued coordination to expand trade and investment flows while advancing negotiations that could further integrate the Philippines into broader EU economic networks.
