The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will lead the nationwide observance of Philippine Arbor Day on June 25, aiming to plant three million trees across the country as part of efforts to boost environmental protection and sustainable development.
In line with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., the activity supports the restoration of degraded lands, conservation of biodiversity, and strengthening of climate resilience. According to DENR Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna, the project will cover 1,538.11 hectares in 1,642 cities and municipalities.
Varieties including native trees, fruit-bearing species, and mangroves will be planted in urban areas, schools, forests, watersheds, and coastal communities.
More than 188,000 participants from government agencies, local government units, civil society groups, private companies, academic institutions, and local communities are expected to join the initiative. Secretary Cuna will lead the main planting activity at the Gomburza National Monument in Manila.
This year’s celebration carries the theme “Luntiang Bukas” or Green Future, emphasizing that collective action from all Filipinos is key to building healthier and more sustainable communities. The program supports the DENR’s 5 Million Trees Program and the implementation of Local Government Unit Forest Land Use Plans.
In compliance with Republic Act No. 10176, Philippine Arbor Day is observed annually on June 25 to encourage widespread participation in reforestation and environmental stewardship. To ensure transparency and showcase national participation, local activities will be documented using geo-tagged photos and shared through a nationwide social media live relay.
