CIMB Bank Philippines has upgraded its mobile banking app with new security features to protect its 10.6 million customers from rising digital fraud.
The move comes as digital scams become increasingly sophisticated. A recent TransUnion report revealed that 72 percent of surveyed Filipino consumers were targeted by digital fraud in late 2025, with victims losing an average of ₱50,000. In response, the Philippine government recently enacted the Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act (AFASA) to mandate that financial institutions better protect the public.
To combat these threats, CIMB has introduced two major in-app security tools to give users more control over their funds. The Money Lock feature allows users to freeze a specific portion of their savings, making that money completely unavailable for online transactions until the user securely unlocks it. For urgent situations, the Emergency Lock feature enables users to instantly freeze their entire account with just a few taps, immediately suspending all transactions. Users can later reactivate their account directly through the app by logging in and entering their MPIN.
“These enhancements further reinforce the bank’s commitment to providing customers with tools that strengthen account security, giving them the power to safeguard their hard-earned money themselves,” CIMB said.
CIMB’s round-the-clock security strategy relies on a framework built on four key pillars. First, the app ensures secure access by using biometric verification, such as face or fingerprint scans, to block unauthorized logins and profile changes. Second, the bank maintains full AFASA compliance by aligning with Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) rules and utilizing advanced money-tracing capabilities to flag fraud.
Third, CIMB employs AI-powered fraud detection to analyze app usage and spot suspicious transaction patterns in real time. Finally, the bank provides continuous ease of contact through 24/7 customer support, allowing users to report unauthorized transactions immediately via the #CIMB (#2462) hotline or the in-app Help Center.
Beyond these digital innovations, CIMB is also actively rolling out financial literacy campaigns. These initiatives include educational webinars and articles designed to help Filipinos spot emerging scam trends and safely manage their money.
