Fresh Canadian mining investments and deeper cooperation on critical minerals and clean energy are set to bolster the Philippines’ drive to become a preferred destination for responsible mining while creating jobs and supporting the global energy transition.
During his official visit to Vancouver, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. secured a fresh commitment from B2Gold Corp. and Filminera Resources Corp. to invest about USD14 million in expanding the solar power facility at the Masbate Gold Project. The companies will also continue exploration activities expected to sustain current employment and generate new jobs.
B2Gold likewise committed, subject to further agreement, to provide technical and exploration expertise to evaluate opportunities to extend the mine’s operating life.
Company officials also briefed the President on new exploration initiatives through the firm’s Philippine Exploration Office, signaling sustained confidence in the country’s mining sector.
The announcement came as Marcos led the Philippines-Canada High-Level Discussion on Collaboration in Mining, Critical Minerals, and Energy, organized by the Department of Trade and Industry.
The forum sought to attract more Canadian investments in mineral processing, renewable energy integration, and environmentally responsible mining technologies while strengthening bilateral cooperation on critical minerals.
The timing is significant as countries race to secure supplies of nickel and copper—key components in electric vehicle batteries, renewable energy systems, semiconductors, and energy storage technologies.
Rich in both minerals, the Philippines is positioning itself as more than a supplier of raw materials by promoting value-added processing and sustainable mining practices.
The Masbate Gold Project serves as proof of concept for the Marcos administration. The mine generated more than P10 billion in taxes in 2025 while helping transform Aroroy into a first-class municipality through investments in infrastructure, education, scholarships, and community development.
The latest Canadian commitments reinforce the government’s message that responsible mining and clean energy can go hand in hand—and deliver tangible economic gains.
