RCBC profit slips as loan growth stays resilient

Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) weathered a more volatile operating environment in the first half of 2026, posting lower earnings after setting aside bigger provisions against potential credit risks even as its core lending business continued to gather momentum.

The Yuchengco-led bank, the country’s sixth-largest by assets, reported a net income of P4.11 billion for the January-to-June period, with profitability weighed down by higher credit impairment provisions amid heightened geopolitical uncertainties.

Beneath the softer bottom line, however, RCBC’s core banking franchise remained firmly on the growth track.

Gross income climbed 11.6 percent to P33.91 billion, driven by an 18.2 percent surge in net interest income as the bank expanded its loan book while improving funding efficiency. Net interest margin widened to 5.1 percent, indicating the bank earned more from every peso of interest-bearing assets despite a competitive lending environment.

RCBC also kept a tight rein on expenses, trimming its cost-to-income ratio to 53.6 percent, a sign that operating efficiency continued to improve even as it invested in expanding its business.

Loan growth remained broad-based but was unmistakably powered by consumers.

Total customer loans rose 9 percent to P806 billion, with the consumer portfolio jumping 22 percent to P402.4 billion. The strong expansion reflects RCBC’s increasing reliance on data analytics and strategic partnerships to identify and acquire borrowers while maintaining disciplined underwriting standards.

The results underscore a balancing act increasingly seen across the Philippine banking industry. While lenders continue to capitalize on resilient consumer demand and higher interest income, many are simultaneously building buffers against potential risks stemming from an uncertain global economic and geopolitical landscape.

The strategy meant sacrificing part of RCBC’s  near-term earnings to strengthen the balance sheet without slowing loan expansion.

The latest figures suggest the bank is prioritizing sustainable growth over short-term profit, betting that a larger, higher-quality loan portfolio and disciplined risk management will leave it better positioned once external uncertainties begin to ease.
