OpenAI sees the Philippines emerging as a major artificial intelligence (AI) deployment hub in Southeast Asia, banking on strong ChatGPT adoption, a deep pool of digital talent, and growing business interest in putting AI to work.
Mark Jeffrey, OpenAI director of partnerships for Southeast Asia and Taiwan, said the Philippines is already one of the company’s strongest markets globally, ranking among the top 15 countries by ChatGPT users.
“The Philippines is actually one of the clearest examples of adoption for us,” Jeffrey said.
Nearly 40 percent of messages on OpenAI’s consumer platform in the Philippines are work-related, he said, with writing, communication, education, learning, and creative media among the leading use cases.
That widespread consumer adoption could give Philippine businesses a head start as AI shifts from experimentation to broader workplace deployment.
“The next chapter is actually bringing that into the workplace for us, responsibly, securely,” Jeffrey said.
OpenAI sees the opportunity extending beyond large corporations to small and medium enterprises and even microbusinesses, as companies of all sizes look for ways to improve productivity and compete in an increasingly digital economy.
“It’s not just about the biggest brands in the Philippines,” Jeffrey said. “It’s about every single organization, whether it be a large organization, an SMB, a mom-and-pop shop.”
Jeffrey said AI should augment rather than replace human judgment, freeing employees to spend more time on creativity, relationships, decision-making, and customer service.
OpenAI is also strengthening its Philippine presence through regional operations and local partnerships, including Thinking Machines Data Science, its authorized reseller in the country.
For OpenAI, the Philippines offers more than a large user base. Its combination of digital talent, creativity, and appetite for new technology could make the country a strategic launchpad for wider AI adoption across Southeast Asia.
“The Philippines has extraordinary talent, digital energy, creativity and ambition,” Jeffrey said, signaling OpenAI’s intention to play a long-term role in the country’s AI build-out.
