    ‘Egay’ agri damage crosses P3B; DA claims damage to rice and corn negligible

    Damage to agriculture caused by typhoon Egay is estimated at P3.17 billion, according to latest data from the Department of Agriculture (DA). 

    But the DA’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Operations Center said despite the damage on rice and corn crops of over P1 billion each, the extent is considered minimal viewed against the annual production target.

    The attached agency said that as of 2 p.m. Wednesday, Egay ruined the equivalent of 106,453 metric tons (MT) of goods tended by 146,260 farmers in 170,843 hectares of crop land.

    Loss or damage on rice crops was estimated at P1.34 billion impacting an area 98,887 hectares wide. Rice production loss was estimated at 38,917 MT or 0.20 percent of the annual target rice production of 19.76 million MT.

    Corn damage was estimated at P1.03 billion impacting 70,003 hectares of the crop or production loss of 55,513 MT or 0.60 percent of annual target volume of 9.30 million MT.

    Other sectors sustaining damage include infrastructure with estimated damage of P351.74 million, high value crops of another P244.51 million, fisheries of P175.39 million and livestock and poultry of P34.27 million.

    The DA the numbers represent captured from data from the Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, Soccsksargen and Caraga.
