Technology is giving Philippine micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) more ways to raise productivity, reach customers beyond their local markets, and scale without the heavy investment in physical infrastructure traditionally required for expansion.
Converge ICT Solutions Inc. said reliable connectivity and wider adoption of digital tools are becoming increasingly important as Filipino entrepreneurs compete not only with businesses nearby but also in a broader digital marketplace.
MSMEs account for about 99 percent of Philippine businesses, provide roughly 60 to 63 percent of employment, and contribute about 36 percent of gross domestic product, making their digital transformation important to overall productivity and economic growth.
Dindo Marzan, senior vice president and head of Converge’s SME Business Group, said internet connectivity should increasingly be viewed as a business investment rather than simply a household utility.
Reliable business-grade connectivity can support digital payments, customer service, cloud applications, data analytics, and online sales, helping smaller firms improve operations while building capacity to grow.
For smaller businesses, technology can also help level the playing field by allowing them to reach customers beyond their immediate communities without having to establish a larger physical footprint.
Marzan warned, however, that some MSMEs continue to underinvest in digital infrastructure, potentially leaving them unable to keep pace as demand increases or as businesses adopt more sophisticated applications.
He noted that basic internet access is no longer enough for many MSMEs, which increasingly need digital tools for operations, customer management, analytics, and online sales.
The issue was highlighted in the season finale of Converge SME Solutions’ BizKarteng Pinoy Podcast, which focused on technology and connectivity as foundations for MSME growth.
As commerce becomes increasingly digital, stronger technology capabilities could help more Filipino entrepreneurs move beyond survival, improve efficiency, and compete in larger markets.
For a sector that accounts for the overwhelming majority of Philippine businesses, making digital tools more accessible could translate into broader gains in productivity, competitiveness, and business expansion.
