CAGAYAN DE ORO — Multi-sector partners are strengthening local defenses against online child risks, with PLDT and Smart donating mobile and connectivity gear to Xavier Science Foundation (XSF) for Project Swipe Safe—an initiative countering online sexual abuse and exploitation (OSAEC).
Run by XSF, ChildFund Philippines, and the City Council for the Protection of Children, this pilot program uses an Asia-Pacific proven app and training to equip youth with practical safety skills and responsible digital citizenship. Tech support will help facilitators deliver sessions across five public secondary schools: Mambuaya, PN Roa Sr., Kauswagan, Lapasan, and Cagayan de Oro City Junior High. Over 10,000 learners stand to benefit.
“Technology empowers, but safety is critical,” said PLDT-Smart’s Roby Alampay. “We turn children into advocates for safer digital spaces.” Aligned with SDGs 16 and 17, the framework was developed by ChildFund Australia, first deployed in Vietnam, and now introduced in the Philippines with this city as its pilot site. XSF’s Sheila de Lima noted the project guides youth through safety planning and positive online habits via engaging learning experiences.
