Probe launched into Philippine Eagle death in Misamis Oriental

Authorities are investigating the death of a critically endangered Philippine Eagle found near a power line in Salay, Misamis Oriental, following a discovery by a local farmer on October 1.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region X reported that field officers recovered the mature raptor, with a 76-inch wingspan and weighed over five kilograms, near an electrical post in Barangay Guinalaban. While an initial site assessment revealed no external trauma, investigators noted burn-like marks on the bird’s feet, prompting suspicions of electrocution.

Because the remains were already decomposing when discovered, definitive answers depend on a thorough necropsy. The Philippine Eagle Foundation received the carcass on October 2 to conduct detailed examinations and confirm the exact cause of mortality.

Environmental officials noted that domestic animals, including chickens and a leashed hound, were present near the accident site, highlighting the complex overlap between local rural activity and wildlife habitats.

Classified as critically endangered, the loss of even a single individual deals a heavy blow to conservation efforts for the national bird. The agency urges communities to report any wildlife sightings or distressed animals immediately to safeguard the remaining population.
