DPWH resumes southbound EDSA rehab; works ongoing round-the clock until October 19

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has officially kicked off the second phase of southbound EDSA rehabilitation, with operations resuming the evening of October 16, covering key stretches from Balintawak down to Monumento.

This effort forms part of the national government’s continuing push to upgrade major thoroughfares across Metro Manila. Works are being carried out simultaneously across three designated road sections: Balintawak to Roosevelt near Zinnia Road; the stretch from Kaingin Road to the North Avenue Bus Station; and from the Monumento Bus Station to Monumento along A. De Jesus Road.

Operations began at 10 p.m. on October 16 with breaking and debris hauling activities. Base preparation, rebar installation, and concrete pouring followed on a 24-hour schedule starting October 17. For October 18, crews will conduct cutting, sealant application, curing, and cleanup works, also running round-the-clock. All affected lanes are scheduled to reopen to motorists by 5 a.m. on Monday, October 19.

Lane closures will be in place within these zones, though remaining lanes will stay open to keep traffic flowing. Motorists passing through southbound EDSA are reminded to drive carefully, follow on-site traffic guidance, and consider alternate routes to avoid slowdowns.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. had previously directed the DPWH to deliver these repairs as fast as possible without sacrificing quality, stressing the importance of limiting disruption for the hundreds of thousands who travel EDSA every day. Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon noted the full EDSA rehabilitation is targeted for completion next year, with Phase 2 covering the stretch from Guadalupe-Orense to Monumento.

Following a December 2025 project review that trimmed overall costs from ₱17 billion down to ₱6 billion, the DPWH shifted to a prioritized approach using more durable Stone Mastic Asphalt. This revised plan already delivered results when Phase 1 — spanning Roxas Boulevard to Orense — wrapped up in April, finishing more than two months ahead of its original timeline.
