Telco builds, upgrades cell sites to LTE standard

Globe Telecom Inc. on Thursday bared constructing 542 new cell sites and upgrading 5,087 mobile sites to LTE standard in the first half this year amid sustained demand for connectivity.

The Ayala-led telco also deployed148,000 fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) during the period, lower than last year as it pursued the optimization of its fiber inventory.

From January to June 2023, Globe invested P37.7 billion as capital expenditure for infrastructure development, a number seen to increase to P71.5 billion or $1.3 billion by year end.

A significant 90 percent of the budget supports the growing data requirement of Filipinos for learning, earning and leisure activities.

“We employ a targeted way of prioritizing network rollouts and optimizations in areas that matter, hence, we are able to sustain our most reliable network. We also believe that network reliability—  a metric that is difficult to achieve— is more important than just speed because, on a small screen, there’s just so much that higher speeds can deliver in terms of improving the actual perceptible experience,” Darius Delgado, head of Globe Consumer Mobile Business said.

Globe’s pursuit of network excellence has earned it the title of “Most Reliable Mobile Network in the Philippines” by Ookla five times in a row, based on analysis of Speedtest Intelligence data from 2Q 2022 through 4Q 2022 and 1Q 2023 to 2Q 2023.

The telco claimed outperforming its competitors by posting the highest consistency scores since the second quarter of 2022.

Standard Insights has also cited Globe for network reliability having attracted the most votes with the strongest and most reliable mobile signal in the country in a consumer survey. It received 37.5 percent of the votes against its nearest competitor with only 35.5 percent.
