Brookfield explores Philippine renewable energy expansion plans

Canadian investment firm Brookfield Corp. is exploring additional renewable energy investments in the Philippines, building on its entry into the market through the acquisition of a developer with a 1.8-gigawatt pipeline of wind, solar, and battery storage projects.

Brookfield Energy Managing Director Stefano Ghezzi discussed the company’s expansion plans with Finance Secretary Frederick Go, citing the country’s growing commitment to renewable energy and reforms intended to improve its investment climate, the Department of Finance (DOF) said.

The meeting followed Go’s earlier engagement in New York with Brookfield Chief Executive Officer Bruce Flatt on investment opportunities in the Philippines.

Brookfield entered the local renewable energy market in 2025 by acquiring Singapore-based Alba Renewables. The transaction brought a development pipeline of about 1.8 GW, with projects primarily located in the Philippines and Thailand.

The DOF did not disclose the potential value of additional investments, the capacity Brookfield may pursue, or a timetable for expansion.

“We welcome Brookfield’s interest and confidence in expanding its investments in the Philippines, particularly in renewable energy,” Go said.

“These investments can help strengthen our energy capacity, support a more reliable and affordable power supply, and create more opportunities for economic growth and job generation,” he added.

The potential expansion comes as the Philippines seeks to attract capital for new power generation and diversify its energy mix. However, Brookfield’s discussions with the government have not yet translated into a publicly announced investment commitment.

Beyond energy, Brookfield has a Philippine presence through Everise, a US-based provider of customer experience and information technology-business process management services that employs approximately 7,000 people locally.

The discussions form part of the government’s broader effort to secure long-term investments in strategic industries, build domestic capabilities, and generate jobs. For now, the scale and timing of any additional Brookfield investment remain undetermined.
