House impeaches VP Duterte anew

Vice President Sara Duterte was impeached anew by the House of Representatives on Monday, after 255 lawmakers endorsed the complaint resolution that will be transmitted to the Senate for trial. The total was more than double the minimum requirement of 106 votes and 40 higher than the 215 votes that backed a largely similar complaint last year, which was later stopped by the Supreme Court from proceeding to a Senate trial. During Monday’s vote, 26 lawmakers voted against the impeachment resolution, while nine abstained. Duterte was impeached over allegations of unexplained wealth, betrayal of public trust, graft, and misuse of confidential funds. The vote came shortly after a change in leadership in the Senate.

Cayetano elected new Senate President as impeachment looms

In a surprising turn Monday, all Senate positions were declared vacant by a 13-10 vote, with one abstention. Senator Alan Peter Cayetano was elected new Senate President following a nomination by presidential sister Senator Imee Marcos. The abrupt leadership revamp pushed by the pro-Duterte bloc comes ahead of an impending vote by the House of Representatives on the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte. The Senate will act as impeachment court if the House endorses the charges against the vice president. Cayetano’s leadership could significantly influence proceedings, and if the pro-Duterte bloc’s support for him holds, it may foreshadow the outcome of the impeachment trial.

Probable cause found to impeach VP

The Committee on Justice of the House of Representatives on Wednesday found sufficient evidence to establish probable cause to support an impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte, citing allegations of misuse of confidential funds, threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his family, and unexplained wealth. The committee report will be elevated to the plenary, where at least one-third of the 316-member House, or 105 lawmakers, must vote to approve the Articles of Impeachment. If approved, the case will be transmitted to the Senate, which will convene as an impeachment court for trial. All 53 members of justice committee  present voted in favor of the findings.
