Vivant Water on Thursday made history as the first company to establish a utility-scale seawater desalination plant in the country at its plant in Cordova, Cebu.
The plant is rated to provide 5 million liters of clean and potable water per day to as much as 5,000 households within Metro Cebu.
When fully operational, water from the plant will be a sustainable source of drinking water helping address the on-going water crisis in Metro Cebu.
“Vivant Water is extremely proud of this accomplishment and we are happy to offer an alternative solution to the water security issue in Cebu province, and ultimately the entire Philippines. The traditional sources of water in the Philippines is from groundwater and surface water, seawater desalination can be the 3rd source of water, and we are proud to be the pioneers” Vivant Water president Jess Anthony Garcia said.
Isla Mactan-Cordova Corp. is a wholly-owned operating subsidiary of Vivant Hydrocore Holdings Inc., or Vivant Water.
The desalination plant, which can generate 20 million liters of potable water a day, is operated and managed by IMCC, a subsidiary of Vivant Water. IMCC was awarded a 25-year contract to supply desalinated water to the Metropolitan Cebu Water District.
Garcia said the plant’s daily output of 20 million liters, expandable to 50 million liters, is equivalent to the average daily consumption of 20,000 households.
The project uses state-of-the-art seawater reverse osmosis technology.
Plant construction on the project site, provided by a partnership with the local government of Cordova, is being undertaken by Watermatic Philippines, a joint venture company of Vivant and WaterMatic International of Israel.
Israel is a world leader in water production, conservation, and technology.
