The National Electrification Administration (NEA) and Northern Samar officials have inaugurated the construction of a new hydroelectric power plant that will provide significant energy savings for local consumers.
On Saturday, NEA Administrator Antonio Mariano Almeda and Northern Samar Governor Edwin Ongchuan led the groundbreaking ceremony for the 3.18-megawatt Mawo hydroelectric project in Barangay Happy Valley, San Isidro, Northern Samar. The facility, a joint venture between the Energy & Building Applications Technologies Corp. (EBAT) and the Northern Samar Electric Cooperative (Norsamelco), will harness the San Isidro Mawo River to generate power for local households and businesses.

The project, set to be completed by January 2028, is expected to reduce electricity generation costs by P0.4482 per kilowatt-hour, resulting in annual savings of approximately P84 million for Norsamelco’s members. Norsamelco holds a 20 percent stake in the project, which has already received NEA approval and community consent. While the total cost of development remains undisclosed, the Mawo plant is seen as a key step in improving energy access and reducing electricity costs in the region.
