Globe is set to establish the Philippines’ first off-grid solar-powered cell site on Taganak Island in the Turtle Islands, a heritage-protected wildlife sanctuary in Tawi-Tawi. The groundbreaking project will bring reliable mobile and data connectivity to the remote area, benefiting around 10,000 residents and supporting vital services like environmental protection and economic growth.
The site, expected to be operational by mid-2025, will eliminate the need for diesel generators, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 40 metric tons annually. It will also enhance monitoring of the Turtle Islands’ fragile ecosystem, a critical nesting ground for green sea turtles.
This innovative facility will serve both locals and eco-tourism visitors, keeping them connected while exploring the pristine sanctuary. The project exemplifies Globe’s commitment to sustainable connectivity, in collaboration with the local government, military, and environmental agencies.
“Through this partnership, we are creating new opportunities for growth and security while protecting the environment,” said Globe’s Gerhard Tan. Local leaders echoed the sentiment, highlighting the positive impact on the community, tourism, and law enforcement efforts.
Additionally, Globe is supporting environmental stewardship by donating trash bins to aid waste management on the islands, demonstrating a holistic approach to development. This collaboration underscores the power of public-private partnerships in enhancing connectivity, preserving natural resources, and empowering remote communities in the Philippines.
