As the holiday season unfolds, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is reminding its 8 million customers to prioritize electrical safety and energy efficiency to ensure a bright and accident-free celebration. Meralco crews will be on standby 24/7, even on Christmas Day, to respond to any power-related issues.
Vice president and head of corporate communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga emphasized the importance of safety, saying, “With various festivities, we encourage our customers to practice electrical safety to avoid any possible untoward incident. Rest assured that our crews are ready to respond to any possible concerns on electricity service.”
To keep homes safe this holiday season, Meralco recommends the following electrical safety tips:
- Unplug Lights and Appliances: Always unplug Christmas lights and appliances when not in use or before leaving home.
- Inspect Christmas Lights: Check for cracked, frayed, or damaged lights that may pose fire risks.
- Use Proper Hanging Tools: Avoid nails or thumbtacks; use light hangers to prevent damaging wires.
- Avoid Overloading Circuits: Do not connect multiple extension cords or create “octopus” connections.
- Have a Fire Extinguisher: Keep a working fire extinguisher accessible for emergencies.
