P200 daily wage hike moves closer to passage as TUCP hails historic House approval

The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) lauds the historic approval of the P200 across-the-board daily wage hike by the House Committee on Labor and Employment, marking a crucial step toward the first legislated wage increase in over three decades.

Originally proposed in TUCP Party-list’s House Bill No. 7871 for a P150 daily hike, the approved increase reflects the House’s strong commitment to uplifting workers amid rising living costs.

“For the first time since 1989, we are closer than ever to passing a legislated wage hike, thanks to the leadership of House Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez. With the House of the People standing firmly behind this measure, we proudly support this committee report and look forward to its passage in plenary next week,” said TUCP President and House Deputy Speaker Raymond Democrito C. Mendoza.

The last legislated wage hike, enacted through the 1989 Wage Rationalization Act, raised the minimum wage by 40% without triggering massive inflation or job losses. Mendoza criticized the current regional wage board system, stating that it has kept millions of workers in poverty for 36 years. “Everything is rising—food, power, fuel, transportation—except workers’ wages. The Philippines demands and deserves a raise now,” he emphasized.

Since filing HB 7871 in 2023, TUCP has led exhaustive hearings with experts, economists, and civil society groups, debunking business sector fears. Mendoza underscored that the P200 wage hike will lift millions of workers out of poverty, boost consumer spending, and drive inclusive economic growth.

“This is a win-win solution. Higher wages strengthen businesses, and targeted support can help MSMEs thrive. It’s time for all—government, employers, and workers—to share the responsibility and build a stronger nation together,” Mendoza concluded.
