Customs busts P2.64B shabu shipment at Port of Manila

The Bureau of Customs announced Thursday the seizure of approximately P2.64 billion worth of methamphetamine hydrochloride, or shabu, concealed in a shipment at the Port of Manila. The shipment, which was declared to contain Crispo vermicelli and Rafhan custard sauce, arrived from Pakistan and was consigned to Redshinting Consumer Goods Trading.

Acting on intelligence from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) requested an alert order, leading to the discovery of 407 kilograms of shabu hidden in 58 boxes among a total of 698. The drugs, valued at P6.5 million per kilogram, were found concealed within packaging for Kirkland Organic Dried Mango.

Customs Commissioner Bien Rubio commended the efforts of Customs officials and partner agencies, including the NBI, PDEA, and the Department of Justice (DOJ), for their swift action. The operation led to the filing of criminal cases against five individuals connected to the smuggling attempt, including company representatives and customs brokers.

This major drug bust highlights the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and underscores the significant role of coordinated law enforcement in safeguarding national security and the economy. The case is now in court, with the accused facing charges under the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
