MGen subsidiary boosts RE capacity with early solar plant completion

Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGen) subsidiary MGEN Renewable Energy Inc. (MGreen) has inaugurated a 19.8-megawatt (MW) solar power plant in Barangay Pesa, Bongabon, Nueva Ecija. The solar farm, expected to power at least 20,000 households and businesses, completed way ahead of schedule and marked a milestone for the company’s renewable energy push.

The solar project, part of the Green Energy Auction program’s second round (GEA 2), is set to receive government benefits under the Department of Energy’s initiative boosting the country’s renewable energy capacity. The Bongabon Solar plant is the first to finish six months before its expected completion date.

In addition to its contribution to the national grid, the facility will help reduce carbon emissions by approximately 19,000 tons of CO2 annually — a figure equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 211 tree seedlings over ten years.

While the financial details of the project remain undisclosed, MGreen president and CEO Dennis Jordan emphasized the broader economic and environmental benefits of the facility. “More than just a solar power plant, MGreen Bongabon Solar is about creating opportunities, reducing our carbon footprint, and setting a new standard for renewable energy initiatives in our country,” Jordan said.

The project also highlights MGreen’s commitment to fostering local economic growth. It prioritizes the hiring of skilled workers from the local community, ensuring the economic benefits are directly felt by those living near the facility.

Looking ahead, MGreen plans to expand its solar capacity by an additional 85.2 MW this year, with upcoming projects in Cordon, Isabela, and Baras, Rizal. As the renewable energy arm of MGen, a subsidiary of Manila Electric Company (Meralco), MGreen is on track to play a major role in the Philippines’ clean energy transition.

This new development signals both a strategic move for MGreen to expand its footprint in the renewable energy market and a significant contribution to the country’s sustainable energy future.
