New identity verification device helps combat cyber threats in PH

World, the largest human-centered financial and identity network, is set to launch “The Orb,” a device designed to verify human identity and combat cyber threats, including identity fraud, deepfakes, and bots, in the Philippines.

Damien Kieran, chief legal and privacy officer at World and Tools for Humanity, confirmed that pilot testing for “The Orb” has been completed in select areas of Bulacan, with expansion plans to include Metro Manila, notably at Gateway Mall in Quezon City and Greenhills Mall in San Juan. The device enables World ID holders to securely prove their identity while maintaining anonymity.

With over 23 million participants worldwide, including over 11 million verified individuals, the World Network seeks to provide users with enhanced online security and tools to manage AI agents, all while protecting against fraud and misinformation. Kieran emphasized the universal appeal of the device, saying that “every person” should benefit from this technology.

The move comes amid a surge in cybercrime in the Philippines, where deepfake-related identity fraud cases skyrocketed by 4,500% between 2022 and 2023. This uptick, coupled with rising bot-driven misinformation, has underscored the growing need for secure digital solutions as the country prepares for its midterm elections in May.

In partnership with key local cybersecurity entities, including the National Association of Data Protection Officers of the Philippines (NADPOP), the Philippine Computer Emergency Response Team (PH-CERT), and the Secure Digital Life Center (SDLC), World aims to safeguard Filipinos’ online presence. Kieran highlighted that the collaboration would not only protect users but also enhance trust in digital transactions.

As the Philippines faces increasing cyber threats, experts agree that bolstering digital security is a national priority. According to Lito Averia, founding president of PH-CERT, securing the nation’s digital ecosystem is crucial for enabling individuals, businesses, and government agencies to thrive without fear of cyber attacks.
