WawaJVCo powers up pumping station with PrimeRES Deal

WawaJVCo, a subsidiary of Prime Infrastructure Capital Inc. (Prime Infra), has contracted PrimeRES Energy Corp. to supply retail electricity to the Upper Wawa Pumping Station, marking a milestone in the Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project.

In a statement, the Razon-led firm emphasized the importance of securing a reliable energy supply for the facility, which includes a 65-meter deep shaft and a 1-kilometer conveyance tunnel capable of delivering 518 million liters of raw water per day to the Manila Water treatment plant. The facility is powered entirely by renewable energy.

“The energization of the Upper Wawa Pumping Station is an important step for the bulk water project towards securing reliable water supply in the long term,” said Melvin John Tan, Prime Infra water market sector lead and president of WawaJVCo. “Our switch to retail electricity supply enables us to adopt cost-efficient power solutions and fulfill our commitment to sustainability.”

The agreement was made under the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) framework of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001, which allows large-scale consumers to source electricity directly from retail suppliers, often at more competitive rates.

Set to benefit over 3.5 million Filipinos, the Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project is expected to provide up to 710 million liters of water per day once completed. WawaJVCo will begin performance acceptance tests for the energized pumping station in June, simulating full-scale operations under varied conditions.
