The 48th Association of Southeast Asian Nations Leaders’ Summit will zero in on urgent regional risks when heads of state gather in Cebu City from May 6 to 8, with a sharpened agenda on energy resilience, food security, and the protection of ASEAN nationals.
Hosted by the Philippines under its current chairship, the summit carries the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together,” signaling a push for tighter coordination against external shocks and internal vulnerabilities.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is set to lead discussions among leaders of the 10-member bloc, alongside dialogue sessions aimed at producing concrete, people-centered outcomes.
The three-day program—trimmed from an earlier five-day schedule—features a Leaders’ Plenary, a Retreat, and a Special Summit for the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area, highlighting subregional cooperation as a lever for inclusive growth.
Officials say talks will also tackle geopolitical spillovers, including the economic and security effects of tensions in the Middle East, reinforcing ASEAN’s long-standing emphasis on dialogue and stability.
Beyond policy, the summit spotlights Cebu’s rise as a strategic hub for investment and connectivity. Key meetings will take place in Lapu-Lapu City, where infrastructure upgrades and logistics preparations are in their final stages to ensure smooth movement of delegates.
Government officials say arrangements—from security to traffic management—are nearing completion, positioning the Philippines to host a summit focused on actionable cooperation and strengthening ASEAN’s collective resilience amid a volatile global backdrop.
