Spain unveils new fighter pilot training system to replace F-5 fleet

Spain has presented a new advanced training system for its fighter pilots, led by Airbus and supported by local companies. The program, called the Integrated Combat Training System (ITS-C), will replace the country’s aging F-5 aircraft and involve about 60 percent participation from Spanish industry.

The project is based on a partnership between Airbus and Turkish Aerospace, which produces the HÜRJET training jet. Spain will adapt 30 of these aircraft to its own specifications, naming them SAETA II. The program also includes maintenance services and a full training system.

Airbus will upgrade a training center at Talavera la Real Air Base, adding modern simulators developed with Indra. The facility will support both real aircraft and virtual training to improve readiness and reduce downtime.

Officials say the program will boost Spain’s defence independence, create jobs, and strengthen local industry. It will also allow Spain to manage and upgrade the system without relying heavily on foreign partners.

The rollout will happen in two phases. Starting in 2028, Spain will receive 21 aircraft, including one prototype for testing new avionics and systems. A ground-based training system is expected to be ready by 2029 or 2030.

In the second phase, all 30 aircraft will be upgraded to full Spanish standards, along with updated simulators. Final deliveries of the SAETA II system are planned between 2031 and 2035.

Spanish companies will play a major role in developing key technologies, including navigation systems, communications, and mission equipment, ensuring greater national control over the program’s future.
