The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has brought its economic and financial learning program (EFLP) to Zamboanga City, targeting farmers, fisherfolk, agri-entrepreneurs, cooperative members, rural households, and local agriculture workers. The initiative aims to help communities make sound financial choices, especially amid seasonal income changes and livelihood risks.
In a message, BSP deputy governor Bernadette Romulo-Puyat emphasized that good money management starts with individual choices—every decision to save, spend wisely, or protect funds builds stronger families, livelihoods, and communities. Sessions focused on how daily financial moves affect long-term stability, covering the value of saving, responsible borrowing, matching income to expenses, and addressing gaps before they become serious problems. Participants also learned about digital tools, insurance, and other safeguards to support their financial plans.
To turn learning into action, the BSP helped attendees open accounts with partner banks, credit cooperatives, and digital financial service providers including e-wallets. Partner agencies also set up booths to share information on available support programs and services, such as national ID registration from the Philippine Statistics Authority. Before the main event, on June 2, the BSP held a separate financial management session for staff of the Office of the City Agriculturist.
The activity aligns with the National Strategy for Financial Inclusion 2022–2028 and the BSP’s goal of inclusive, sustainable growth. By equipping agriculture-based communities with clear knowledge and practical tools, the program helps them build greater confidence and resilience in managing their finances.
The effort directly addresses the unique financial challenges of agriculture-dependent groups, who face irregular earnings and higher vulnerability to shocks. It bridges knowledge gaps, expands access to formal financial services, and strengthens the foundation for local economic stability—key to broader inclusive growth across the country.
