DOE, Ayala Land launch weekly energy-saving drive

The Department of Energy (DOE) and Ayala Land, Inc. have launched a nationwide campaign encouraging Filipinos to cut electricity consumption for one hour each week, as the government intensifies efforts to promote energy efficiency and strengthen energy security.

Launched on June 3 at BGC Park Triangle in Taguig City, the O.N.E. (Oras Natin sa Efficiency) campaign calls on households, businesses, schools, and institutions to reduce power use from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. weekly by switching off unnecessary lights, unplugging idle appliances, and minimizing energy waste.

Branded as “One Hour, One Energy, One Nation,” the initiative forms part of the DOE’s demand-side management strategy, which seeks to curb power consumption through behavioral changes.

Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin said the campaign aims to transform simple conservation habits into a nationwide movement that contributes to long-term energy resilience.

The launch comes amid growing electricity demand driven by economic expansion, urbanization, and rising temperatures. Energy efficiency has become a key pillar of government policy to reduce pressure on the power grid while managing energy costs.

The campaign aligns with Ayala Land’s broader sustainability goals across its estates, malls, offices, hotels, and industrial developments. The property giant manages about 1 million megawatt-hours of electricity consumption annually and has been expanding renewable energy use, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and green building certifications across its portfolio.

The company is also pursuing a Net Zero 2050 target validated by the Science Based Targets initiative, underscoring its commitment to lowering carbon emissions and improving operational efficiency.

By encouraging millions of Filipinos to adopt simple energy-saving practices, the DOE and Ayala Land hope the O.N.E. campaign will demonstrate how small individual actions can collectively reduce power consumption, improve energy security, and support the country’s transition toward a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
