Chinese brands, EVs steal spotlight at PIMS

The Philippine automotive industry’s shifting landscape was on full display at the 10th Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS), where electrified vehicles and the growing presence of Chinese automakers emerged as the event’s dominant themes.

Held at the World Trade Center Metro Manila until June 7, the four-day exhibition brought together 17 automotive brands, offering a glimpse into how manufacturers are positioning themselves for a market increasingly defined by electrification, technological innovation, and intensifying competition.

A notable feature of this year’s show was the sheer number of electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) unveiled across multiple brands.

From established Japanese manufacturers to newer entrants, automakers used the event to showcase their commitment to cleaner mobility while acknowledging that consumers continue to demand a mix of vehicle technologies.

Industry heavyweights such as Nissan, Toyota, Mitsubishi Motors, Honda, Subaru, Tesla, MG, and VinFast presented their latest electrified offerings, reflecting growing investments in next-generation transportation solutions.

The show’s theme, “Forward in Every Drive,” underscored the industry’s efforts to balance innovation with evolving consumer needs.

Yet perhaps the most striking development was the growing prominence of Chinese automotive brands. Once viewed as niche players, Chinese manufacturers now occupy increasingly visible positions in the Philippine market, competing directly with long-established global marques on technology, features, and pricing.

Brands including Jetour, BAIC, Chery, Omoda & Jaecoo, Geely, MG, and Foton showcased a broad range of SUVs, commercial vehicles, hybrids, and EVs, highlighting the rapid expansion of Chinese automakers across multiple vehicle segments.

Their strong presence reflects broader regional trends, with Chinese manufacturers leveraging advances in battery technology, vehicle software, and supply chain integration to accelerate international expansion.

Taken together, the displays at PIMS suggest an industry that remains optimistic despite economic uncertainties. As automakers race to introduce new technologies and expand electrified lineups, the Philippine market is becoming an increasingly competitive battleground where innovation, affordability, and sustainability will determine the industry’s next winners.
