Manila Water speeds up project for cleaner waterways in QC, Marikina

Manila Water is fast-tracking the Batasan–Balara Flow Diversion Project to boost water quality, community cleanliness, and public health in Quezon City and Marikina. The initiative redirects wastewater from the area to the Marikina North Sewage Treatment Plant, keeping untreated waste out of local creeks and rivers and cutting down water pollution.

Made up of two main parts—lift stations at Vista Real Creek and Nangka, plus force main pipelines—the project expands sewer networks and sanitation access for dense neighborhoods. It serves over 5,700 households, with lines crossing the Marikina River to deliver waste for proper treatment. As of April 2026, pipelaying work is 90% done; the Vista Real Creek facility has been operational since 2025.

The project complies with the Clean Water Act and supports the Supreme Court’s Manila Bay rehabilitation order. It feeds into the Marikina North plant, a 100-million-liter-per-day facility serving parts of Marikina, Quezon City, and San Mateo, Rizal, since 2016. According to Manila Water’s Dittie Galang, the upgrades align with the company’s environmental duty and shared goals to restore water bodies and deliver better services. This effort is part of broader work to strengthen wastewater management for cleaner surroundings and healthier communities.
